Overviewframe

Jo Bell of Clepington Primary School, Dundee, wanted to create a Glow Group to illustrate to colleagues how Glow underpins the principles of the Curriculum for Excellence using evidence from her classroom practice.

In this cookbook Jo will talk us through her group and we will see examples of how Glow was used within Jo’s classroom to support the four capacities of CfE.

Context

Jo wanted to have a means of demonstrating to colleagues how she believed Glow underpinned the Curriculum for Excellence. She felt the most effective way to illustrate the potential of Glow was to present through Glow itself.

Jo’s Glow Group highlights the ways in which Glow delivers the four capacities of CfE, with evidence from her practice as a class teacher in Dundee. It also illustrates how all skills within the CfE Technologies Outcomes can be developed through using Glow such as:

  • Working with others
  • Planning and organization skills
  • Creativity and Innovation
  • Using ICT Tools
  • Collaborating
  • Critical Thinking
  • Discussion and Debate
  • Searching
  • Presentation
  • Evaluating

In this cookbook, we will:

  • Find out what the Glow group looks like
  • Hear Jo’s views on how Glow can support the four capacities of CfE and help meet Technology outcomes

Ingredients

What did Jo initially need to build the Glow Group?

  1. A Glow Group
  2. An XML web part to display a video clip
  3. Discussion web part
  4. Text editor web parts
  5. Documents web part
  6. Web links web part

During the cookbook, Jo links to Glow Groups that she used in her class. In these Groups, pupils participated in discussions and uploaded documents. It was necessary to ensure pupils had sufficient permissions within these Glow Groups to enable them to take part in discussions and upload documents. The pupils were given contributor rights to the class groups.

Product

Using Glow as a means of presenting information, not only had an impact in terms of highlighting the extent to which Glow does underpin the four capacities of the CfE, but it also illustrates how Glow can be used for a variety of purposes. This has now been taken on board by the ICT Support Section in Dundee City Council, where the use of glow is far more wide-reaching than ever before. This Glow Group tracks the impact that Glow has had within a classroom setting on pupils’ attitude, motivation and contribution to learning. It also demonstrates pupil’s views on Glow, but most importantly it closely correlates the potential of Glow with the principles of CfE, and demonstrates how they marry up.
