RSVP – Using Glow Meet to support Conversational French
Overview
Marie-Louise Brogan is Depute Head Teacher at Holy Family Primary school in Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire. As part of her remit she is responsible monitoring and supporting learning and teaching within the middle and upper stages.
In this cookbook we will look at how Marie-Louise used a Glow group and Glow Meet to support French Conversation with St. Ninian’s Secondary School. For several years the French Teacher from St. Ninian’s visits Holy Family PS for a block each year to develop conversational French in the classroom as part of the Primary Secondary liaison programme. After a discussion with the French teacher it was decided that Glow Meet would be a good way to provide ongoing support to the pupils and that this support could come from S1 pupils so that both groups of pupils were developing their oral language skills.
Context
The children at Holy Family receive French tuition from their class teacher as part of their programme of work from Primary 5. In order to develop these skills Glow was recognised as a way of providing a platform for discussion.
It was decided to create a Glow group where learners from P.7 would become members and they would be able to Glow Meet with a French Buddy to have conversations which would be directed by the teacher and supported on the whiteboard with a list of phrases and vocabulary.
In this cookbook, we will find out:
• What the RSVP Glow Group looks like
• How to create a Glow Group and add members to the group from other establishments
• How to add several Glow meets and name the Glow meeting Rooms
• How to use the whiteboard in Glow Meet to share ideas with each other.
Ingredients
What did Marie-Louise need to create the elements of the Glow Group?
1. A Glow Group
2. Access to Glow Group for class teacher , pupils and pupils from other establishment
3. Web cam with microphone and speakers
It was necessary to ensure staff had Administrator rights within the Glow Group to enable them to make changes to the Glow group and add members to the Group and the learners had contributor rights.
In the next section, we will take a look at the ‘RSVP’ Glow Group and learn how to recreate elements within it.

Impact
The impact of this Glow group is clearly beneficial for the learner. The children will be able to use the Glow Group to develop their French conversation through discussion with their French Buddy. The access that Glow Meet provides is great as the learners are able to meet and work with each other simply. The French Teacher hopes to roll a similar programme out throughout the associated Primary schools if this proves to be successful.
