Using Glow Learn to ensure purposeful ICT to support learning
Overview
Marie-Louise Brogan is Depute Head Teacher at Holy Family Primary school in Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire. As part of her remit she is responsible monitoring and supporting learning and teaching within the middle and upper stages. Last year she also shared a class with a Probationer and was responsible for Social Studies and ICT in the P.4 class.
In this cookbook we will look at how Marie-Louise used Glow Learn to develop a short course for the learners in their topic, The Vikings. Marie-Louise found that through using the Glow Learn platform the learners were able to make full use of their allocated ICT time and the learning in this time was purposeful and ensured that ICT was supporting learning.
Context
The Primary 4 class were studying The Vikings as part of their Social Studies and changed their classroom into a Viking Longship. They were very enthusiastic about the topic and the Glow Group for the class had a Glow Page for this topic and the children regularly added useful websites they had found. Marie-Louise had been giving instructions for the ICT time using Text Editor in this Glow Page but after attending Glow Learn training she could see the potential this would have for providing a programme for the children to follow. Using the tools available it meant that when the children went to the ICT suite they were able to log on and start their learning immediately as all links and instructions were given within Glow Learn.

Impact
When the children were using Glow Learn for course work in the ICT suite in ensured that the work they were doing was purposeful; and was a real way of ICT supporting learning. The children had to read for instructions and were able to work independently with all the resources they need. It was found that the time used in ICT was spent on learning and less on listening to the teacher for instructions and it also meant that the teacher was able to support those pupils who needed it. As the course was created in Glow Learn it was also found that the children would access it from home and work on their menus there. It was also a good way to introduce the children to Glow Learn and the components within it.

This is an excellent article which I plan to share with all the staff at my school. It is the first time I have seen such concise instructions to help teachers really get started with Glow for everyday teaching.
