Overview
Staff and pupils at St Margaret’s Academy in Livingston are using Glow as part of a Curriculum for Excellence Health and Wellbeing project. The ‘Be Fit, Be Healthy’ project will take place in May 2010, but as part of the project planning, a Glow Group has been created that will later be accessed by staff and pupils.

Context
Colin McGill is a Chemistry teacher in St Margaret’s Academy, Livingston. In addition, he has responsibility to support Curriculum for Excellence projects running within the school.

In order to deliver some of the Health and Wellbeing outcomes, and to enable a range of Departments in the school to work together, Colin came up with the idea for a ‘Be Fit, Be Healthy’ project which will run for 4 weeks in May 2010 with S1 pupils.
The project will include the Science, PE and Health & Technology Departments, along with input from staff teaching PSE.
In order to help promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle to pupils, Departments will contribute in the following ways:
PE
• Fitness assessments at the start and end of the project
• Weekly fitness tips and suggestions
• Encouragement of pupils to be more active
Health & Technology
• Weekly healthy recipes
• Encouraging pupils to cook healthily at home
• Healthy recipe competition
Science
• Health information eg Effects of smoking
• Analysing results from the PE Fitness assessments (an example of numeracy across learning)
• Energy in food
PSE
• Supporting good mental health by looking at causes and effects of stress
• Exploring relaxation and meditation techniques

These activities and lessons will help to address, amongst others, the following Health and Wellbeing Curriculum for Excellence experiences and outcomes:

HWB 3-04a I understand that my feelings and reactions can change depending upon what is happening within and around me. This helps me to understand my own behaviour and the way others behave.
HWB 3-07a I am learning skills and strategies which will support me in challenging times, particularly in relation to change and loss.
HWB 3-15a – I am developing my understanding of the human body and can use this knowledge to maintain and improve my wellbeing and health.
HWB 3-16a – I am learning to assess and manage risk, to protect myself and others, and to reduce the potential for harm when possible.
HWB 3-27a I can explain why I need to be active on a daily basis to maintain good health and try to achieve a good balance of sleep, rest and physical activity.
HWB 3-30a By taking part in practical food activities and taking account of current healthy eating advice, I can prepare healthy foods to meet identified needs.

In addition, the work on percentages being done in science will contribute to numeracy across learning outcome:
MNU 3-07a I can solve problems by carrying out calculations with a wide range of fractions, decimal fractions and percentages, using my answers to make comparisons and informed choices for real-life situations.

There will also be opportunity to address literacy across learning outcomes through the activities within PSE and other areas.

In this cookbook, we will look at
• The Be Fit Be Healthy Glow Group
• How Health promoting videos are being included within the Glow Group

Ingredients
What did St Margaret’s Academy need to do to create the elements of the Glow Group and give pupils and staff access to it?
• Create a Glow Group at school level
• Add membership to the Group
• Add web links to health-based and exercise sites
• Embed videos on healthy eating and exercise

Recipe

In this section, we will take a look at the Be Fit Be Healthy Glow Group and then in the videos that follow, find out how to replicate some of the elements within it.

What does the Be Fit Be Healthy Glow Group look like? (4:26)

Impact
At this point, the Glow Group has only been created in preparation for the project in May, and in fact, more content is still being added. We will come back to look at the Group and project again to look at the impact and usage it has had.
